“Sunset” is a mellow contemplative piece, originally born from an improvised chord progression and later developed into a more complex musical structure.
The focal point of the composition is a simple vocal-like motive of a major second. This motive resembles lonely call answering meditative lulling arpeggios in the accompaniment. It first appears in the intro and later travels into a refrain an octave lower, with its repetitive nature creating a prayer-like effect. Each episode in between refrains is telling a story, which iterates and develops, eventually leading to a series of modulations and creating the false culmination only to resolve into a bittersweet reprise of the first episode. The following last refrain tricks us into thinking that after the long search the peace has been found and accepted but the stubborn lonely call breaks out into a willful song that refuses to accept the rest proposed. At last it calms down quietly but unyieldingly with the final chord which was supposed to bring the release but only hints the ending with the tonic bass… the top dominant chord resists resolution, leaving the air to vibrate with the restless uncertainty.
